What does a new-car warranty actually cover?

It covers the repair or replacement of parts that fail because of a defect in materials or workmanship during the warranty period. That typically includes the engine, gearbox, electronics, suspension components and body hardware. It does not cover items that wear out with use such as tyres, brake pads, wiper blades and bulbs, nor damage from accidents, misuse, neglect or unapproved modifications.
How do I keep my warranty valid?

Service the car at the intervals in the service book at an approved workshop, use the specified parts and fluids, keep every invoice and job card, report faults promptly and avoid modifications that affect covered components. Aftermarket accessories are usually fine if fitted correctly, but a performance chip, non-standard suspension or a towbar fitted incorrectly can give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a related claim.
Is an extended warranty worth buying?

It depends on how long you plan to keep the car and how much the extension costs relative to the repairs it might cover. An extension makes most sense on a car with complex electronics or a turbocharged engine that you intend to keep well beyond the standard warranty. Read the terms carefully, because extended warranties often have claim limits and more exclusions than the original.
Does the warranty transfer if I sell the car?

Yes. The manufacturer's warranty is attached to the vehicle and its remaining balance passes to the next owner, which is part of why a newer car with warranty remaining resells more easily. The new owner must continue to service the car correctly to keep it valid. Extended warranties bought separately sometimes have different transfer rules, so check the policy.
