How much should a car-of-the-year award influence my choice?

Treat it as a signal that the car is well regarded by people who drove it against its rivals, not as proof it suits you. Award juries weigh design, engineering and value across a whole segment. Your decision should weigh your budget, your daily use and the running costs of the specific variant you would buy.
Which car rankings are actually independent?

Crash-test programmes that publish their methodology and full results are the most objective, because they measure the same things the same way for every car. Owner-satisfaction and reliability surveys with large sample sizes are useful too. Be cautious with awards where the sponsor is not disclosed or where nearly every entrant wins something.
Does a safety rating from another country apply to the car sold in South Africa?

Not automatically. The variant sold locally can have different standard equipment, and some safety features fitted overseas are optional or absent here. Check the local specification sheet for airbag count, stability control and driver-assistance systems rather than assuming the overseas rating carries over unchanged.
