What is autonomous emergency braking and does it really work?

Autonomous emergency braking, or AEB, uses a camera or radar to detect a vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist ahead and applies the brakes automatically if the driver does not respond to a warning. Independent testing shows it reduces rear-end collisions markedly at urban speeds. It is less effective at high speed, in heavy rain, or when the sensor is dirty, so it supports attentive driving rather than replacing it.

Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection is the most valuable given the number of pedestrians on our roads. Blind-spot monitoring earns its keep on multi-lane highways and with taxis changing lanes. Adaptive cruise control reduces fatigue on long inter-city drives. Can I switch driver-assistance systems off?

Before disabling anything, understand what you are giving up, and remember the systems are there for the moment your attention lapses.

Do driver-assistance systems lower my insurance premium?

Some South African insurers offer better rates on cars with autonomous emergency braking and stability control, because claims data shows fewer and less severe collisions. It is not universal, and the effect on premium is usually modest compared with factors such as the car's value, your claims history and where it is parked overnight.
