Service Plans vs Maintenance Plans Explained

Almost every new car comes with a plan, but 'service plan' and 'maintenance plan' are not the same thing — and the difference can cost or save you real money over the years you own the car.

Service plan

A service plan covers the scheduled services your car needs at set intervals — oil, filters, fluids and the labour to fit them. It does not cover wear-and-tear items like brake pads, tyres, clutches or wiper blades. It keeps your routine servicing free, but you pay for things that wear out.

Maintenance plan

A maintenance plan is more comprehensive — it covers scheduled servicing plus wear-and-tear items that fail through normal use (brakes, clutch, batteries, globes and more), excluding things like tyres and accident damage. It's the closest thing to worry-free motoring, and a car still under maintenance plan is far easier to sell.

Why it matters

Can you extend or top up your plan?

Most manufacturers offer the option to extend a service or maintenance plan, or to upgrade a service plan to a maintenance plan, either at purchase or before the original cover expires. It's worth considering if you plan to keep the car for a long time or rack up high mileage, because out-of-plan repairs and services come straight out of your pocket.

The key is to decide before the original plan lapses — extending is almost always cheaper and simpler while cover is still active. Think about your likely ownership period honestly: if you keep cars for two or three years, the standard plan probably suffices; if you're a keeper who runs cars into high mileage, extended cover can save you a fortune and protect your eventual resale value.
