Every car on South African roads must be registered and carry a valid licence disc, renewed annually at a fee set by the province and based on the vehicle's weight. When you buy a new car the dealer usually handles the initial registration and licensing and adds the cost to the deal. After that, renewal is your responsibility, and driving with an expired disc invites a fine and can complicate an insurance claim.
A few other administrative costs deserve a line in the budget: toll fees on routes you use regularly, the occasional traffic fine, and the cost of a roadworthy certificate if you sell the car privately. None of these are large on their own, but together they add up over a year. Setting a reminder for the licence renewal and keeping your documents in order avoids the avoidable ones.

How much does a car licence cost each year?

The annual licence fee is set by each province and depends mainly on the vehicle's tare weight, so heavier cars and bakkies pay more. Renewal notices are sent before the disc expires, and payment can be made at licensing offices, some post offices and online in most provinces. Late renewal attracts penalties, so diarise the date.
Who registers a new car, me or the dealer?

The dealer normally handles the first registration and licensing as part of delivery and includes the fee in the deal. You will need to supply identity and proof-of-address documents. The registration certificate is issued in your name, with the bank noted as title holder while the car is financed. Confirm exactly what is included before you take delivery.
Does a new car need a roadworthy certificate?

Not at first. A brand-new car is registered without a separate roadworthy test. A roadworthy certificate becomes necessary when ownership changes, so if you later sell the car privately the buyer will need one before registering it. Trade-ins are handled by the dealer, who arranges the test.
Can I check whether I have outstanding traffic fines?

Yes. Fines can be checked and paid through official channels, including the national traffic-fine payment platforms and municipal offices, and some banking apps offer a lookup. Clearing fines matters because unpaid infringements can complicate licence renewals and lead to enforcement action, and they are easier to query while they are recent.
