How Trade-Ins Work

The trade-in process from valuation to settlement, and how the figure is applied to your new car.

A trade-in is a sale of your current car to the dealer supplying your new one, with the price offset against the new purchase. The dealer inspects the car, checks its history and market value, and makes an offer. If you accept, the agreed amount is applied to the new deal as a deposit. Where the old car still carries finance, the dealer settles the bank directly and only the balance, positive or negative, flows into the new agreement.

It happens in one transaction, which is the main appeal: no advertising, no strangers test driving your car, no waiting for a buyer. Car4Less consultants arrange valuations through the franchise dealer network so the trade-in and the new-car purchase are coordinated together.

How Trade-Ins Work — questions

The questions people ask about how trade-ins work, answered plainly.

How does a trade-in work when buying a new car?

+

The dealer assesses your current car and makes an offer. If you accept, that value is deducted from the price of the new car as a deposit, and the paperwork for both vehicles is handled in the same transaction. Any finance owing on the old car is settled from the trade-in amount first.

Can I trade in any make or model?

+

Generally yes. Franchise dealers take trade-ins of any brand and either retail them on their used-car floor or move them on through the trade. Very old, high-mileage or damaged cars attract lower offers, and some dealers may decline unusual vehicles, but most cars can be traded.

Can I trade in a car that is fully paid off?

+

Yes, and it is the simplest case: the full agreed value becomes your deposit on the new car. Bring the registration certificate, your ID and the service history to speed up the valuation and the change of ownership, and expect the process to be quick.

Do I have to trade in at the dealer that sells me the new car?

+

No. You can sell your car privately or to a specialist buyer and use the cash as a deposit instead. Trading in at the supplying dealer is simply the most convenient route, and it lets the dealer settle any outstanding finance directly.
