Trade-Ins

How trade-ins work in South Africa: valuations, trade-in versus private sale, outstanding finance, equity and preparing your car for the best offer.

5 topics · 20 answered questions · 1 articles

Most people buying a new car have an old one to move on, and the trade-in is the easiest way to do it. The dealer values your current car, the agreed figure is applied to the new purchase as a deposit, and any finance still owing on the old car is settled out of the proceeds. It is fast and convenient, but the convenience has a price: trade-in offers are typically below what a patient private sale might fetch.

The topics below explain how valuations are arrived at, how outstanding finance and equity work, when a private sale is worth the effort and how to prepare your car so the offer is as strong as possible. Car4Less consultants can arrange a trade-in valuation through the franchise dealer network as part of your new-car enquiry.

How does a trade-in work when buying a new car?

+

The dealer assesses your current car and makes an offer. If you accept, that value is deducted from the price of the new car as a deposit, and the paperwork for both vehicles is handled in the same transaction. Any finance owing on the old car is settled from the trade-in amount first.

How is my trade-in value calculated?

+

Dealers start with industry trade guide values for your make, model, year and mileage, then adjust for condition, service history, accident repairs, tyre wear, outstanding recalls and current demand for that model. The result is a trade value, which is lower than the price the car would be advertised for at retail.

Will I get more money selling privately?

+

Usually, because private buyers pay closer to retail value. The premium is largest on popular, well-kept cars and smallest on older or unusual vehicles that are hard to sell. Deduct advertising costs, your time and the risk of a no-show buyer before comparing the figures honestly.

Can I trade in a car that still has finance?

+

Yes. The dealer requests a settlement figure from your bank, pays it from the trade-in proceeds, and applies whatever is left to the new car. If the trade-in value does not cover the settlement, the difference is typically added to the new finance agreement, subject to the bank's approval.

Should I repair my car before trading it in?

+

Fix cheap, obvious things: bulbs, wipers, fluids, a valet, minor scuffs that polish out. Skip expensive repairs such as panel resprays or mechanical work; the dealer will price the work at trade rates and you will seldom recover what you spent. Be honest about any known faults.
