The SUV has become the default family car in South Africa, and the crossover, a car-based SUV that looks the part without the heavy off-road hardware, accounts for most of that growth. Crossovers ride like tall hatchbacks: easy to drive, economical and comfortable, with useful ground clearance for potholes and gravel. Traditional SUVs built on bakkie chassis are tougher, tow more and go further off-road, but they cost more to run and can feel heavier in town.

What is the difference between an SUV and a crossover?

A crossover is built on a car platform with a unitary body, so it drives and rides like a raised hatchback and is lighter and more economical. A traditional SUV is built on a separate ladder-frame chassis shared with a bakkie, which makes it tougher, better at towing and more capable off-road, but heavier and thirstier. Most family SUVs sold today are technically crossovers.
Do I need 4x4 or all-wheel drive?

Most South African SUV buyers never leave tar and gravel, and front-wheel drive with decent ground clearance and good tyres handles both. All-wheel drive adds traction on wet, muddy or loose surfaces and peace of mind in the rain, at the cost of higher purchase price and fuel use. Real off-roading, towing on sand or farm work justifies a proper 4x4 with low range.
