What is the difference between an SUV and a crossover?

A crossover is built on a car platform with a unitary body, so it drives and rides like a raised hatchback and is lighter and more economical. A traditional SUV is built on a separate ladder-frame chassis shared with a bakkie, which makes it tougher, better at towing and more capable off-road, but heavier and thirstier. Most family SUVs sold today are technically crossovers.
Is a double-cab bakkie a good family car?

For many South African families, yes. Modern double cabs have proper rear seats with ISOFIX points, air conditioning, smartphone integration and a full suite of safety features, plus a load bed for bikes, camping gear and building supplies. The compromises are a firmer ride, a high step-in for small children and a big turning circle. A canopy or roller cover secures the load bed.
Is a hatchback good for a family?

A larger hatchback works well for a small family, with room for two child seats and a boot that takes a folded pram and shopping. Once children grow or a third arrives, many families move to a compact SUV for the extra space and higher seat height. Check rear legroom and boot depth on your shortlist with the seats you actually use.
Are sedans going out of fashion in South Africa?

Sales have shifted towards SUVs and crossovers, but sedans remain popular with buyers who value comfort, economy and a big boot. Manufacturers continue to offer strong models in the compact and medium classes and premium brands still sell large numbers of executive sedans. Lower demand can work in a buyer's favour through generous specification and keen pricing.
7-seater SUV or MPV, which is more practical?

An MPV usually wins on pure practicality: sliding doors for tight parking bays, a flat floor, a more usable third row and a bigger boot with all seats up. A 7-seater SUV offers a higher driving position, ground clearance for rough roads and a more fashionable look, often with a tighter third row. Choose the MPV for space, the SUV for terrain and image.
Is a premium car worth the extra money?

It depends on what you value. Premium models generally offer better refinement, materials, technology and performance, and the badge carries social weight. Mainstream cars have closed much of the gap on safety and equipment, so the objective difference is smaller than the price suggests. If the driving experience and image matter to you and the budget is comfortable, it can be worth it.
Are performance cars expensive to insure?

Usually, yes. Insurers price on the car's value, repair cost, theft attractiveness and claims history, and performance models score high on all of them.
