Instalments & Loan Terms
How the loan term shapes your instalment and total interest, and how to choose a term you will not regret.
The term is the length of the finance agreement, and it has a bigger effect on your instalment than most buyers realise. A longer term spreads the same amount over more months, so each instalment is lower, but you pay interest for longer and the total cost rises. Longer terms also keep you in negative equity for more of the agreement, which complicates trading in early.
The sensible approach is the shortest term you can comfortably afford, not the longest the bank will allow. If a car only works at the maximum term, it is a signal to look at a less expensive model. Buying below the manufacturer's retail price through Car4Less lowers the starting point, which often makes a shorter term achievable on the same car.
Instalments & Loan Terms — questions
The questions people ask about instalments & loan terms, answered plainly.
What is the maximum finance term for a new car in South Africa?
+
Most banks offer terms up to 72 months on new vehicles, and some go longer. The longer the term, the lower the monthly instalment and the higher the total interest. A very long term also means owing more than the car is worth for a large part of the agreement.
Is a shorter loan term always better?
+
It costs less overall and builds equity faster, but the instalment is higher. The best term is the shortest one that leaves your monthly budget comfortable with a buffer. Stretching to an unaffordable instalment on a short term is worse than a slightly longer term you can sustain.
Why does my instalment include more than the car price?
+
Interest, the bank's initiation fee, monthly service fees and sometimes credit-life insurance are added to the amount you repay. Calculator results on this site exclude bank initiation and service fees, so the bank's quote will be slightly higher than the estimate.
Can I change the term after signing?
+
Not usually without refinancing. You can, however, pay extra whenever you like, which effectively shortens the term and saves interest, and you can settle the balance early. Check the settlement provisions in your agreement before relying on either option.
