Car Finance

Vehicle finance in South Africa explained: applications, credit, interest rates, deposits, terms, balloon payments, settlement and what to do if you are declined.

9 topics · 36 answered questions · 4 articles

Almost every new car in South Africa is financed, which makes the finance agreement the single biggest factor in what your car really costs. The banks that fund most of the market, WesBank, Absa, MFC and Standard Bank, each assess affordability, credit history and deposit before offering a rate relative to prime. Understanding how the pieces fit together, from the term you choose to the balloon you are offered, is the difference between a comfortable instalment and a stretched one.

These topics explain each element without jargon. Car4Less submits finance applications on your behalf to the major banks, but you always sign directly with the bank on its own terms; Car4Less is not a credit provider and cannot guarantee approval or a particular rate.

Who provides vehicle finance in South Africa?

+

The bulk of new-car finance comes from WesBank, Absa Vehicle and Asset Finance, MFC (a division of Nedbank) and Standard Bank Vehicle and Asset Finance. Some manufacturers also have captive finance arms. Car4Less submits your application to the major banks and you sign the agreement directly with the one that approves you.

Can I apply for finance before choosing a car?

+

Banks generally assess a specific vehicle and price, but a consultant can give you a good indication of what you are likely to qualify for based on your income and credit profile before you commit to a model. That indication helps you shortlist realistically rather than fall for a car outside your range.

What credit score do I need for vehicle finance?

+

There is no single published threshold; each bank applies its own scoring and affordability rules. In practice, a record of on-time payments, low utilisation of existing credit and no recent defaults or judgments puts you in a strong position. A thin file is not fatal, but it may mean a higher rate or a deposit request.

What is the difference between a linked and a fixed rate?

+

A linked rate moves whenever the prime lending rate changes, so your instalment can rise or fall during the term. A fixed rate stays the same for the whole agreement. Fixed rates typically start a little higher because the bank is carrying the risk of future increases.

Do I need a deposit to finance a new car?

+

Not always. Many buyers with strong credit profiles are approved without one. But a deposit lowers the instalment and total interest, and a bank may ask for one if your profile is thin or the affordability is tight. Treat a deposit as a lever you control rather than a requirement.

What is the maximum finance term for a new car in South Africa?

+

Most banks offer terms up to 72 months on new vehicles, and some go longer. The longer the term, the lower the monthly instalment and the higher the total interest. A very long term also means owing more than the car is worth for a large part of the agreement.

What is a balloon payment on car finance?

+

It is a lump sum, usually expressed as a portion of the purchase price, that you agree to pay at the end of the term instead of spreading it across the instalments. Your monthly payment is lower as a result, but the lump sum remains owing, with interest charged on it throughout the agreement.

Can I settle my car finance early?

+

Yes. The National Credit Act gives you the right to settle a credit agreement at any time. Request a settlement quote from the bank, which will be valid for a short period, pay it, and the bank releases its interest in the vehicle. Check your agreement for any conditions.

Why was my car finance declined?

+

Common reasons are affordability, where your income after expenses and debt does not comfortably cover the instalment; adverse credit history; irregular or unverifiable income; incomplete documentation; or a mismatch between the vehicle price and your profile. Banks will usually state the main reason on request, which tells you what to fix.
