The Four Levers of Your Car Instalment
Two buyers can finance the same car and pay very different amounts each month. The difference comes down to four levers. Understand them before you sign, and use our calculators to test your own numbers.
The deposit
Every rand you put down is a rand you don't finance — lowering both the instalment and the total interest paid over the term.
A 10% deposit on a family SUV meaningfully trims the monthly payment, and because the financed amount is smaller, the saving compounds over the whole term.
The term
Stretching from 60 to 72 months lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest — you pay for the car longer.
72 months is the common choice in South Africa. Shorter terms cost more per month but leave you owning the car sooner, with less interest paid overall.
The balloon
A balloon defers a slice of the price to the end of the term. The instalment drops now — but the balloon waits for you at the end.
Balloons of up to 40% are common on new-car finance. They suit buyers who trade in regularly; they cost more in total interest, so treat them as a cash-flow tool, not a discount.
The rate
Your interest rate is personal — set by the bank's credit assessment, usually relative to prime. A better profile means a cheaper car.
Linked to prime
One application through Car4Less goes to the approved banks, and you take the best approval. Even a single percentage point saves real money over 72 months.
Then: buy below retail
The cheapest rand to finance is the one you never borrow — every Car4Less car starts below the manufacturer's retail price.
And for qualifying buyers, the separate Payment Saver Plan returns up to R3 000 a month: R6 500 − R3 000 = R3 500 effective instalment (example only; T&C's apply).
Finance — questions
Where can I test these levers myself?+
Use the free calculators on this site — the instalment calculator lets you adjust price, deposit, balloon, term and rate, and the affordability calculator works backwards from your monthly budget.
Should I take the longest term and biggest balloon?+
Only if monthly cash flow is your priority and you understand the total cost. Both levers lower the instalment but raise the total interest paid — the calculators show you both sides before you decide.
Where can I see this in action?+
