New-Car Documentation
The documents you need to buy and finance a new car in South Africa, and the paperwork you receive with it.
The paperwork side of a new car is straightforward if you prepare. For a finance application the bank normally wants your identity document, a valid driver's licence, recent payslips, bank statements and proof of residence; self-employed buyers usually need financial statements or a longer run of bank statements. At delivery you receive the registration certificate, licence disc, warranty and service-plan documentation, and the owner's manual.
Keep every document in one place, digital and physical. The service book and warranty terms matter for future claims and for resale, and the finance agreement sets out your settlement rights. A Car4Less consultant will tell you exactly what to send for the application and checks it before it goes to the bank, which avoids the back-and-forth that slows approvals.
New-Car Documentation — questions
The questions people ask about new-car documentation, answered plainly.
What documents do I need to apply for vehicle finance?
+
Typically a South African ID or passport with permit, a valid driver's licence, your three most recent payslips, three months of bank statements and proof of residence not older than three months. Requirements differ slightly between banks and for self-employed applicants, who usually provide financial statements as well.
What documents come with a new car?
+
The vehicle registration certificate, the licence disc, the manufacturer's warranty and service or maintenance plan documentation, the owner's manual and often a delivery checklist. Keep the service book stamped or updated digitally at every service, because it supports warranty claims and resale value.
Does the car get registered in my name if it is financed?
+
Yes. You are the registered owner and the bank is recorded as the title holder until the finance is settled. Once you settle the account the bank releases its interest and you receive the updated documentation. Financed cars are registered and licensed exactly like cash purchases.
Do I need proof of insurance before delivery?
+
For a financed car, yes. The bank requires comprehensive cover to be in place before the vehicle is released, and the dealer will usually ask for confirmation. Arrange quotes while the finance is being processed so there is no delay on delivery day.
