Buying a New Car

Everything about buying a brand-new car in South Africa: budgeting, cash or finance, timing, test drives, ordering, delivery and the paperwork.

8 topics · 32 answered questions · 3 articles

Buying a new car is one of the biggest purchases most South African households make, and the process has more moving parts than the showroom brochure suggests. There is the car itself, of course, but also the budget behind it, the finance that carries it, the timing of the purchase, the test drive that either confirms or kills the shortlist, and the paperwork that turns a decision into a registered vehicle in your driveway. Get each step right and the whole experience becomes calm rather than stressful.

The topics in this category walk through that sequence in plain English, written for South African conditions. Where it helps, they point to the Car4Less showroom of 1 318 new cars, every one listed below the manufacturer's retail price, and to the calculators and guides elsewhere on the site.

Quick answers

One question from each topic. Open the topic for the full set.

What is the first step when buying a new car?

+

Start with the number, not the car. Work out what you can comfortably afford each month once fuel, insurance and servicing are added to the instalment, then shortlist cars that fit inside it. Buyers who begin with a model they love and try to make the budget stretch afterwards are the ones who end up over-committed.

Can I get vehicle finance for my first car with no credit history?

+

Often yes, but the bank will want evidence that you can afford the instalment: payslips, bank statements and proof of address. A thin credit file can mean a higher interest rate or a request for a deposit. Building a small, well-managed credit record beforehand, such as a store account paid on time, usually helps.

What portion of my income should go towards a car?

+

Common guidance is to keep all vehicle costs, not just the instalment, well within a modest share of your take-home pay so that a rate increase or a fuel-price spike does not tip you into difficulty. The exact figure depends on your other debt and living costs, which is why an honest monthly budget matters more than any rule of thumb.

Is it better to pay cash for a new car?

+

If you have the cash without emptying your emergency fund and the money would otherwise sit in a low-interest account, paying cash is hard to beat because you avoid interest and finance fees entirely. If the cash is your only safety net, or it earns more elsewhere than the loan would cost, financing may be the wiser move.

Is month-end really a better time to buy a car?

+

Dealership sales teams do work to monthly and quarterly targets, so there can be more willingness to negotiate near month-end. The effect is modest and depends on how the dealer is tracking. It is not worth delaying a well-prepared purchase for, but if you are ready anyway, the last week of the month does no harm.

What should I check on a test drive?

+

Driving position and visibility, ride comfort over rough surfaces, noise at highway speed, steering feel in a car park, how the gearbox behaves when pulling away and overtaking, and whether the infotainment and controls make sense without a manual. Also test the boot with real items and fit any child seats you use.

How long does delivery of a new car take?

+

In-stock vehicles can be delivered within days of finance approval and payment. Factory or regional orders take longer, from a few weeks to a few months for less common specifications or imported models. Ask for a realistic estimate up front and remember it depends on manufacturer stock and shipping.

What documents do I need to apply for vehicle finance?

+

Typically a South African ID or passport with permit, a valid driver's licence, your three most recent payslips, three months of bank statements and proof of residence not older than three months. Requirements differ slightly between banks and for self-employed applicants, who usually provide financial statements as well.
