Advertised range comes from a standardised test cycle that favours steady, moderate speeds. On the highway, aerodynamic drag rises sharply, so consumption climbs. Cold weather, hills, a loaded car, roof racks and heavy use of the climate control all eat into range. Driving smoothly and keeping speeds moderate recovers a good deal of it.

Can I do a long road trip in an electric car in South Africa?

On the main national routes, yes. DC fast chargers are spaced along the busiest highways, and route-planning apps and the car's navigation show where to stop and how long to charge. Trips into remote areas need more care because chargers are sparser. Allow a little extra time and treat charging stops as your rest breaks.
