Is diesel cheaper to run than petrol in South Africa?

Often, but not automatically. A diesel usually uses less fuel for the same distance, and the retail price of diesel is set separately from petrol and moves each month. Diesel variants also tend to cost more to buy and to service. The saving only becomes real once you cover enough kilometres a year for the lower consumption to outweigh the higher purchase price.
Is a diesel engine bad for short trips?

Not bad, but poorly suited. Modern diesels carry a particulate filter that needs sustained running at higher temperatures to clean itself. A pattern of five-minute school runs and shopping trips can leave the filter clogged, triggering warning lights and extra workshop visits. If most of your driving is short and urban, a petrol or hybrid is usually the easier choice.
Which is better for towing and carrying loads?

Diesel, in most cases. Diesel engines produce strong torque low in the rev range, which is exactly what you want when pulling a trailer, loading a bakkie or climbing a pass with a full car. Turbocharged petrol engines have narrowed the gap, but for regular heavy work the diesel still feels more relaxed and usually uses less fuel doing it.
Do diesel cars hold their value better?

In South Africa, diesel bakkies and large SUVs have traditionally held their value well because of steady demand from working and rural buyers. For small hatchbacks and sedans the picture is less clear, and a petrol version can be just as easy to resell. Resale depends far more on the model, condition and service history than on the fuel alone.
