Fuel economy in South Africa is quoted in litres per hundred kilometres, and the figure printed in the brochure comes from a standardised laboratory test. That makes it useful for comparing one model against another, but a poor predictor of what you will actually see. Traffic, terrain, speed, load, tyre pressure and driving style all move the number, usually upwards. A realistic expectation is that your real-world figure will sit somewhat above the official one.

The good news is that the driver has more influence over consumption than the engine does. What does litres per 100 km actually mean?

It is the amount of fuel a car uses to travel one hundred kilometres, so a lower figure is better. To estimate your monthly fuel need, divide your monthly kilometres by one hundred and multiply by the consumption figure. Because the official figure comes from a laboratory test, use your own trip-computer average for budgeting once you have the car.

Why does my car use more fuel than the official figure?

The official number comes from a controlled test cycle that does not reflect stop-start traffic, hills, hot weather with the air-conditioner on, highway speeds or a loaded car. Driving style matters enormously too. A gap between the brochure and reality is normal; use the official figure to compare models, not to plan your budget.

Does driving slower really save fuel?

On the highway, yes, noticeably. Air resistance rises steeply with speed, so the fuel needed to hold a higher cruising speed climbs faster than the time you save. Easing off a little on long trips is one of the simplest savings available. In town, smoothness matters more than outright speed: avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary braking.
