Is diesel cheaper to run than petrol in South Africa?

Often, but not automatically. A diesel usually uses less fuel for the same distance, and the retail price of diesel is set separately from petrol and moves each month. Diesel variants also tend to cost more to buy and to service. The saving only becomes real once you cover enough kilometres a year for the lower consumption to outweigh the higher purchase price.
Does a hybrid need to be plugged in?

No. A conventional, self-charging hybrid recharges its battery from the petrol engine and from regenerative braking while you drive. There is no charging cable and nothing to install at home. Only a plug-in hybrid, which has a much larger battery, is designed to be charged from a wall socket or charger.
What is the difference between a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid?

Battery size and how it is charged. A conventional hybrid has a small battery topped up by the engine and braking, and cannot be plugged in. A plug-in hybrid has a much larger battery that you charge from an external supply, allowing meaningful electric-only driving. Both keep a petrol engine, so neither leaves you stranded when the battery is flat.
Are electric cars cheaper to run than petrol cars?

Per kilometre, charging at home is usually cheaper than fuelling a comparable petrol car, and servicing is simpler because there is no engine oil, spark plugs or exhaust to maintain. The purchase price is typically higher, though, so the total picture depends on how many kilometres you drive and how long you keep the car. Public fast charging costs more than home charging.
Can I charge an electric car from a normal plug at home?

Yes. Every EV comes with a cable for a standard household socket, and it works, but it is slow and best for overnight top-ups. A dedicated wall charger installed by a qualified electrician charges several times faster, is designed for daily use and is the option most owners settle on. Check that your home's electrical supply can handle it.
How long does an electric car battery last?

Most manufacturers engineer the pack to outlast the typical ownership period, and real-world data from older EVs shows gradual capacity loss rather than failure. Battery warranties commonly run for many years and a high mileage, which signals the manufacturer's own confidence. Well-cared-for batteries are expected to remain serviceable well beyond the warranty period.
What does litres per 100 km actually mean?

It is the amount of fuel a car uses to travel one hundred kilometres, so a lower figure is better. To estimate your monthly fuel need, divide your monthly kilometres by one hundred and multiply by the consumption figure. Because the official figure comes from a laboratory test, use your own trip-computer average for budgeting once you have the car.
Is a turbocharged engine reliable?

Yes, when serviced properly. Turbocharging has been standard on diesels for decades and is now mainstream on petrol engines. The turbo runs hot and fast, so it depends on clean oil and regular oil changes. Sticking to the service schedule and allowing the engine a moment to idle after hard driving keeps a modern turbo healthy for a long life.
