What a Diesel Particulate Filter Does, and Why Short Trips Are Its Enemy

Every modern diesel carries a filter in its exhaust that most owners never think about until a warning light appears. Understanding what the DPF does, how it cleans itself and why a life of short trips upsets it can save you a frustrating visit to the workshop.

If you have bought a diesel in the past decade, there is a component in its exhaust you probably never think about until a warning light appears. The diesel particulate filter, usually shortened to DPF, exists to trap the soot a diesel engine produces so that it never reaches the air. It does that job well. What it does not tolerate is a life of short journeys, and understanding why can save you a frustrating trip to the workshop.

What the filter actually does

Diesel combustion produces fine particles of soot. The DPF is a ceramic honeycomb in the exhaust that traps those particles as the gases pass through. Over time it fills up, and the engine's control unit monitors the build-up. When it reaches a set level, the system cleans the filter in a process called regeneration.

How regeneration works

Regeneration burns the trapped soot off by raising the exhaust temperature high enough to turn it into ash, which takes up far less space. On most cars this happens passively during sustained driving, when the exhaust is naturally hot, or actively, when the engine injects extra fuel to raise the temperature deliberately. Either way, it needs the car to keep running at a decent speed for a stretch of time, typically the sort of drive you do on a highway rather than in a suburb.

You may notice a slightly higher idle, a change in engine note or a brief increase in consumption while it happens. That is normal.

Why short trips cause problems

A regeneration that is interrupted, because you switched the engine off after five minutes, simply does not complete. The soot stays in the filter. Do that every day and the level keeps rising while the car never gets the sustained run it needs to clear it. Eventually the system warns you, performance may be reduced to protect the engine, and if it is ignored for long enough the filter can need a forced regeneration at a dealer or, in extreme cases, replacement.

None of this is a defect. It is a modern diesel being used in a pattern it was never designed for. There is a second, quieter consequence: during an active regeneration the engine injects extra fuel late in the cycle, and if that cycle keeps being cut short some of the fuel can find its way into the engine oil. Over many short trips the oil level creeps up and its protective quality drops, which is why the service schedule matters more on a short-trip diesel than on any other car.

Living happily with a DPF

Diesel owners who follow a few simple rules almost never see the warning light:

  • Give the car a sustained drive at highway speed regularly, not just on holiday.
  • If a DPF warning appears, take the car for a proper drive as soon as you can rather than continuing with short trips.
  • Use the engine oil specified by the manufacturer; the wrong oil can produce ash that clogs the filter.
  • Do not switch off mid-regeneration if you can avoid it; let the drive finish.

The buying decision

If your driving is genuinely mixed, with regular longer runs, a diesel and its filter will live a long, uneventful life. If your pattern is almost entirely short urban trips, the honest conclusion is that a petrol or hybrid version of the same car will suit you better and cost you less in aggravation.
