Walk into a showroom today and the word hybrid covers two quite different cars. One never sees a charging cable and simply uses less fuel than the petrol car it is based on. The other carries a much bigger battery, charges from a socket at home and can cover a daily commute without starting its engine. They share a name and a broad idea, but they suit different households, and picking the wrong one is an expensive way to be disappointed.

How a self-charging hybrid works
A conventional hybrid pairs a petrol engine with a small battery and an electric motor. The battery is charged by the engine and by recovering energy every time you slow down. The car's software decides, moment to moment, whether to use the motor, the engine or both. In traffic the engine spends a lot of time switched off; on the highway it does most of the work.
For the driver, nothing changes. You fill up with petrol, you never plug in, and the only visible difference is a lower consumption figure, most noticeably in town.
How a plug-in hybrid works
A plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, starts with the same idea and adds a much larger battery that you charge from an external supply, typically overnight at home. With a full battery the car can drive a meaningful distance on electricity alone, often enough for a typical commute, before the petrol engine takes over. Long trips need no planning around chargers, because the engine is always there.
The trade-off is weight, cost and a dependence on charging. The bigger battery makes the car heavier and more expensive, and if it is not charged regularly the car reverts to being a petrol car carrying a battery for no benefit.
The decision comes down to your driveway
Ask three questions. Do you have off-street parking with access to power? Is your daily distance predictable and within the electric range? Are you the kind of person who will plug in every evening the way you charge a phone? Answer yes to all three and a plug-in hybrid can deliver most of the running-cost benefit of an electric car with none of the range anxiety.
Answer no to any of them and the self-charging hybrid is the better buy. It costs less, weighs less, needs no installation and asks nothing of your habits, while still cutting fuel use where it matters most, in stop-start traffic.
Running costs in practice
The self-charging hybrid's saving is steady and undramatic: noticeably less fuel in town, a little less on the open road, with no change to your routine. The plug-in hybrid's saving is larger but conditional. Charged every night and driven mostly within its electric range, it can go weeks between fuel stops. Driven on long trips or left uncharged, it behaves like a slightly heavy petrol car. Servicing is similar for both, and both carry a separate, longer warranty on the hybrid battery. Resale is still settling for plug-ins in South Africa, so buy one for your own use rather than as a bet on the used market.
What about load-shedding?
Because a plug-in hybrid has a petrol engine, an interrupted charge is an inconvenience rather than a crisis; the car still drives normally, just on fuel. Owners who charge overnight usually find scheduled outages barely register, since the charger resumes when power returns. A conventional hybrid, of course, is unaffected entirely.
